Lab Report Grading Criteria

The following criteria will be used in grading experiment assignments submitted in lab report form for this class. This criteria is adapted from a journal paper that appeared in SIGCSE Bulletin, vol 26 no 3, Sept 1994.


A. Experiment Design (25%)
   Rating    Criteria

     25      Experiment well thought out
     15      Experiment partially planned out
      5      ad hoc experiment

B. Gathering Data (20%)
   Rating    Criteria
   ------    --------
     20      Data gathered correctly and in sufficient quantity
     12      Data gathered nearly correctly or insufficient quantity
      4      Not enough data gathered or gathered incorrectly rendering 
             experiment useless
      0      No data gathered

C. Specification Satisfaction (20%)
   Rating    Criteria
   ------    --------
     20      Experiment satisfies specification completely and correctly
     12      Many parts of the specification not implemented
      4      Experiment does not satisfy specification

D. Lab Report (15%)
   Rating    Criteria
   ------    --------
     15      Well-formated, easy to read and follow
      9      Hard to read or follow the experimental process
      3      Incomprehensible report

E. Analysis/Conclusions (10%)
   Rating    Criteria
   ------    --------
     10      Thoughtful and reasonable conclusions
      6      Some conclusions that are reasonable
      2      Incorrect conclusions
      0      No conclusions/analysis described

F. Creativity (10%)

    0 - 10 percentage points to experiments/lab reports that usefully 
    extend the requirements, that perform particularly creative analysis
    and/or draw particularly creative conclusions, or that creatively
    gather data or in some other ways creatively design and/or conduct
    an experiment.
